This post is dedicated to Santa and specifically the pop cultural context in which the image of Santa came to be. In 1931 The Coca-Cola Company introduced ads featuring Santa Claus in major publications such as The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, National Geographic, The New Yorker, and others. The Santa Claus campaign was created by D’Arcy Advertising Agency who wanted the campaign to have a wholesome Santa that was both realistic and symbolic.
The Santa used in the campaign was created by artist Haddon Sundblom. Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore’s 1822 poem “A visit from St. Nicholas” also known as “Twas the night before Christmas” for inspiration. Moore’s depication of Santa was a warm, friendly, and pleasantly plump Santa which helped create the image of modern day of Santa that comes to mind today.
The campaign was an enormous success which has had a powerful influence on how we the modern day image of Santa. The campaign appeared each season with updates to fit the times. Although Santa Claus was not created by The Coca-Cola Company, they certainly had great influence in popular culture of how we imagine Santa to look and feel like.
I had a great Christmas and I hope you did too. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
